アニメ: 妄想代理人 Paranoia Agent

Difficulty Level: 3
Subs / Transcript: unknown

well, that was, um... unexpected...

Actually, i think the translation "Delusion Agent" would have made more sense for this series. There is a little paranoia here and there, but mainly delusion, illusion, mass hysteria, mass consumption, general insanity, and general strange-dream-bordering-on-nightmare stuff. At times it's hilarious, at other times a bit disturbing. Sometimes it was a little too much for me, so i turned it off to sort of wake up. But, it's certainly not repetitive...

The language is harder than in the other series i've reviewed so far in a few ways. Firstly, some things just don't make that much sense unless you're down with a whole world of delusions, and these sentences are hard to catch for me. Secondly, there are sometimes voice effects which make things more difficult to understand. Finally, there is a wide, wide range of speaking styles in different places, from newsreaders to old fashioned speak to yakuza-like and so on. But, like any series, there's plenty of things you'll be able to understand too. :)

  1. Ah, Satoshi Kon, RIP (yes, you can tell his final blog post made me tear up). 妄想代理人 is good! My favorites by him are 千年女優/Millennium Actress for the sentimentality of it (movies usually don't have enough character development in two hours, or whatever the running time, to make me cry...That one, and 蛍の墓 are the only anime movies, or movies in general, that did), and Tokyo Godfathers, because it may be the funniest, quirkiest Christmas movie I've even seen, and yet it had a lot of heart. I think 妄想代理人 is the only series he did though...
He's known for doing "you don't know what is real"-type stuff like Perfect Blue, 妄想代理人, and Paprika, but I like his more plot-focused work better. Although Susumu Hirasawa's music is great in anything.

  2. what was his final blog post?? when did he die?! ahhhh you know so much about all this stuff!!! you really should be doing this blog instead lol ;) i'd love to read your reviews, of series as well as books & stuff!
btw, i think there's some kind of option to share a blog, if you ever want to post reviews but not start your own blog...?

Anyway, thanks for the extra recommendations, i'll check them out!!! (yeah, 蛍の墓 also made me cry. & that's actually a pretty difficult feat, i hardly ever cry at films!)

  3. Really? Well, I just finished setting up my literature blog (look at my blogger profile if you want to see it ^-^), and while I don't think I'm the greatest reviewer, it is fun to review stuff (笑), and I would be honored to post media and non-novel book reviews at your blog.

He died in late August last year. I read the English translation here: http://www.makikoitoh.com/journal/satoshi-kons-last-words because I was in a hurry and then SRS-ed parts of the Japanese original, the link to which can be found in the same post. It's rambling but good...I was in tears at the end, and it takes a lot to make me cry. (Yeah, 蛍の墓 is the only movie I've seen that can reduce even people who don't like subtitles to tears. ^-^; )

  4. Greatgreatgreat!!! i love your new blog, hopefully it'll inspire me to read some Japanese literature!!! :D i'll add you to the blog, so feel free to post whenever you like. :) Oh, also feel free to add an icon for yourself on the layout of this blog & an about you section so it doesn't just look like mine.

hahah i don't think i'm a great reviewer either, i just write whatever i think. i guess the main thing is to have the links to subs & difficulty level. ugh, i really have to update & backdate the difficulty rankings page at some point :/

i read that post with Satoshi Kon's last words, man, i can't imagine what it's like to die with such clarity of mind that he had. I'm sure i wouldn't be able to maintain the dignity he had. It's such a shame he's gone!!!

ugh, my cat just brought a mouse in and i made him let it go and now it's gone and hidden somewhere. My cat's going nuts. ahhhhhhh nooooooo what should i do?!?!

  7. I'm glad! Even if I don't get many visitors, if nothing else, it's fun reviewing what I've read.^^

Yeah, after I read that I watched everything he made that I hadn't seen.^^; I'm looking forward to seeing the movie he died before finishing, Yume Miru Kikai, even if it looks like it's going to be targeted towards younger audiences it should still be fun, since I don't think he could make a boring movie.^^

Oh, your poor cat! Occasionally mice show up in my college apartment and mouse traps (the "no touch" kind that's easy to throw away and you can't see it) work really well for me...Or maybe your cat can find it again or something...

Glad you found my email. ^^ I'll be sure to review something whenever I have time. This is going to be fun! Thanks for inviting me again!<3

  8. It looks like I can't add an about me section since I can't edit pages, but when I think of something witty for an intro I'll comment on one of the posts, and you can add it to the page, I guess or I could email it to you or something but I don't know your email^^; (which might be nice to have anyway) so I guess I'll post it.

BTW, finished my first review. Ah, that was fun.^-^

  9. poor cat?!?! i was thinking along the lines of poor mouse lol!

well, the end of this story is that it was hiding under the piano, so i had to move it out, then get my cat to try to fish it out from underneath, which he did, but then he let it go again and it ended up under the freezer. At which point, my cat got bored of it, and promptly went off somewhere else, leaving me to catch the mouse on my own.

Anyway, i managed to catch it by it's tail and it wasn't too damaged so i let it go outside. 1 mouse saved for another day! :D

    stupid cat lol!
