日本語 Difficulty Level Rankings

This is the page where i'll rank the difficulty level of anything i watch in Japanese. I'll update it any time i watch anything new with a link to a blog post, where i'll write a short review of what i watched. So, you can keep up with it either by subscribing to the blog in general, or by checking back to this page whenever you're lost for something to watch :)

The difficulty levels i'm using go from 1 (easiest) to 3 (hardest). Each type of programme is ranked with respect to how difficult it is compared to other shows of that type. So, for a drama show, 2 is average, 1 is easier than average, and 3 is harder than average. But a show ranked 1 in drama is likely to be easier than a documentary ranked 1, for example... because a documentary that is easier than the average documentary is still likely to contain some specialised terms.

Anyway, hope this is helpful to you! If you think i've ranked anything wrong, leave me a message!

  1. I was just wondering (after discovering and invading this blog, hehe :P), if you could possibly add the JLPT level for the difficulty, f.e. would you say JLPT3 is still beginner or already intermediate?

  2. hihiii! I'm sorry, that's one request i can't really do... i've never really done much JLPT stuff, so it's quite difficult for me to tell. As a rough guide, i'd say JLPT3 is Beginner, yeah. I think Beginner / Intermediate might go a bit further than that. But i really can't tell for sure, sorry...

As for your other questions, i'm gonna write a post on it, because it might be helpful to other people too :) i'll try to post it soon!

  3. Thank you IceCream!!! An answer is very appreciated. Meanwhile I found another follower and contributor to my blog, the experienced Nagareboshi (also a koohii user). Would be honoured to see corrections, recommendations and suggestions coming from you onto my blog!!!
Hope to read you soon :DD

  4. You know I always thought of the JLPT levels like this:

    N1/1kyuu: Advanced
    N2/2kyuu: Upper Intermediate
    N3:Lower Intermediate
    N4/3kyuu: Upper Beginner
    N5/4kyuu: Lower Beginner

But then I learned that textbooks that have 3kyuu grammar call themselves "intermediate" so I guess the terms are more flexible than I thought. XD
There was a nice summary of all the JLPT levels on the back of my N2 certificate, but I don't have it with me...Ah, I think I found it online:http://www.jlpt.jp/e/about/levelsummary.html

I think people don't really need N1 to understand most media out there, I guess I/A could be N1/N2...
You might want to add the new ranking system up there as well at some point.
